Music Never Sleeps NYC, Part 3

    By Roslyn Wertheimer

    Dear friends,

We’re now beginning week 8 of sheltering-at-home. I don’t know about you, but for me this is getting old! One of the few things that keeps me going right now is music. And even though we can’t go to live concerts right now, we can still listen to our favorite recordings, and with technology’s help we can enjoy many wonderful "home performances" from artists we love.  They’re stuck at home, just like us. Here are a few more videos from Caramoor artists who participated in the "Music Never Sleeps NYC" livestreamed marathon in March.

    1. Tessa Lark & Michael Thurber

Tessa Lark is an alumna of our Evnin Rising Stars program. She’s performed a few times at Caramoor since then and she’s playing here with her partner Michael Thurber (bass) in their unique style they call "Stradgrass" — a genre-bending blend of bluegrass, jazz, classical, and original works. They just finished setting up their home studio in time to record this!

    2. Nico Muhly

Celebrated American composer Nico Muhly has written over 100 works as diverse as his musical influences in opera, concert, dance, and film. He hasn’t actually performed at Caramoor yet, but he will soon ... look out for his violin concerto, Shrink, to be performed by Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto. He’s also written a short piece for our new Trimpin sound art sculpture to be installed this summer. Here, he plays a short piano work of his own called New Pages.

    3. Michael Brown

Hailed by hailed by The New York Times as "one of the leading figures in the current renaissance of performer-composers," Michael Brown gave a wonderful recital in our Spanish Courtyard in 2018. More recently, you may have seen his performance of Beethoven’s "Pathétique" Sonata last weekend in our "What Makes It Great?" livestream with Rob Kapilow. In this video, he plays one of his own compositions, Folk Variations, as well as Mendelssohn Variations Sérieuses.

    4. Sarah Jarosz

Three-time Grammy winner Sarah Jarosz has appeared at Caramoor many times, with her own band as well as super-group I’m With Her. Here, she and bass player Jeff Picker offer a cover of Connie Converse’s "Fortune's Child" and Sarah’s original song "Build Me Up From Bones."

Wishing you good health and good music,

    Kathy
