An interview with composer Matthew Aucoin
At the age of 28, American composer Matthew Aucoin has already made a name for himself in the classical music world. His works have been premiered by the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, violinist Jennifer Koh, and tenor Paul Appleby, among others. Aucoin’s orchestral work, Evidence was commissioned by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and he conducted the premiere in 2016. It is set to make its New York premiere here at Caramoor on June 30th with Ludovic Morlot conducting Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
Kathy Schuman, Caramoor’s VP, Artistic Programming & Executive Producer, sat down with Aucoin earlier this year to discuss Evidence: what inspired its title, the challenges of the piece, and how letting another conductor lead a performance of his work is like parents letting their kids leave home.
