We decided to ask the Caramoor staff to contribute one song to our Fall 2021 Staff Playlist. Just one song that reminds them of fall. The one song where if you put it on, light a candle, throw on a blanket, pour a cup of something hot, then everything feels right in the world. We hope you listen to the playlist, and along the way, learn a little bit more about our staff and what makes them smile.
Sure on This Shining Night, Op. 13 No.3 (Arr. Parkin for Cello and Piano), performed by Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Isata Kanneh-Mason
“As the weather cools down in New York; I look forward to the clear skies at night that allows the best stargazing. Originally written by Samuel Barber for voice, Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason perform an instrumental version arranged by Parkin that beautifully captures the emotion of the James Agee poem.” – Brittany Frieder, Membership Assistant & Donor Concierge
Here’s To Life performed by Shirley Horn
“I like incomparable Jazz artist Shirley Horn’s rendition of “Here’s To Life” from her album/cd Here’s To Life: Shirley Horn with Strings. This song and her smooth vocals put me in a reflective mood. Just sit back, listen and chill. ” – Ed Lewis, President & CEO
They Can’t Take That Away From Me performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
“Nothing like the feeling evoked when Ella and Louis are on the stereo in my living room. Add my favorite blanket, a cup of tea, a glowing fireplace and me trying to match her vocals note for note … and you get the picture.” – Barb Prisament, Media Relations & Outreach Consultant
November Rain by Guns N’ Roses
“What could be better than the combination of stormy rainy-day sounds and string arrangements on this hard rock ballad?” – Karla Stewart, Human Resources Coordinator
In a Sentimental Mood performed by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane
“It’s just so smooth and easy, and it fills any space with a warmth. It’s a perfect soundtrack for cooking, reading a book, or lounging in front of a fire.” – Brittany Laughlin, Director of Marketing & Communications
Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers
“I love this arrangement of the title track from Phoebe’s 2020 album. This version is just her isolated vocals accompanied by arranger and multi-instrumentalist Rob Moose, who re-scored the song for a string ensemble (all of which are played by him in this recording). The song itself is a tribute to singer-songwriter Elliot Smith, but also explores Phoebe’s fear of being too big of a super-fan (or a “punisher”) when she meets her heroes.” – Alex Cutrone, Director of Ticketing & Guest Relations
Autumn Almanac by The Kinks
“My usual fall season playlist is very grunge, moody, and all around sad about the warm summer months being a not-so-distant memory. That’s where Autumn Almanac by The Kinks comes in to save the day! It reminds me that the fall can be a fun and beautiful time of the year; being surrounded by the vibrant foliage of Westchester County and spending time with friends and family in my home town.” – Liat Greif, Executive Assistant & Board Liaison
Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer by Stevie Wonder
“Immediately when you see this title, you think, well why is this on a fall playlist? It’s obviously for summer. But, if you listen to the lyrics of the song, Stevie goes into one of his recognizable ballads, practically grieving about his love who has left him. He sings to her, saying that he thought she would “be warm love in springtime” and “be the life in autumn”. It’s a beautiful song, which reads like a heartbreaking poem, but there is nothing like putting on this gut-wrenching ballad, and hearing Stevie’s silky vocals guide the sun into an early fall sunset.” – Roslyn Wertheimer, Marketing Manager
The Ash & Clay by The Milk Carton Kids
“This title track, which incidentally was performed in the fall of 2013 in the Rosen House Music Room, evokes feelings of coming indoors. Filled with beautiful, introspective tunes the entire Ash & Clay album is a great match for a weekend drive or just curling up with family and friends as the seasons change.” – Jennifer Pace, Director of Individual Gifts
