    The Chevalier: In Conversation

    By Roslyn Wertheimer
In anticipation of this summer' exciting performance of The Chevalier, Caramoor collaborated with the Chautauqua Institution to host a panel discussion exploring the story behind the piece.

The Chevalier is an innovative work of concert theater that honors the life of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges — a prolific 18th-century composer, virtuoso violinist, the finest fencer in Europe, general of Europe’s first Black regiment, and a crusader for equality. The story of this extraordinary artist of color, overlooked in history, is bursting to be told!

Host Sylvia Bennett leads the discussion and is joined by writer and director, Bill Barclay; Liz Player, Artistic Director of The Harlem Chamber Players; Kathy Schuman, Caramoor Vice President and Artistic Director; and Deborah Sunya Moore, Vice President and Chief Program Officer of the Chautauqua Institution. Together, the panel explores themes of racial equality within classical music and the role that artists, creators, presenters, and institutions play in encouraging inclusion in the arts.

Caramoor presents The Chevalier on July 10. Information and tickets available here
