Elaine Schroeder, Longtime Trustee and Former Caramoor Board Chair, Passes Away

Caramoor notes with sadness the passing of Elaine Schroeder of Scarsdale, NY. A valued member of the Board of Trustees until her retirement in 2020, Elaine’s involvement with Caramoor began in the 1950s and included a tenure as Board Chairman. She provided valued and wise counsel for many years of Caramoor’s continued evolution. Along with Edmund (Ed), her husband of more than 60 years, Elaine was also a familiar presence at many concerts each season. In 2019, a special dedication plaque was added to a bench in a sunny corner of the Sunken Garden “in honor of their decades of service to and support of Caramoor.” If you find yourself in the Sunken Garden, listening to music wafting on the breeze from the Venetian Theater or the grounds, please join Caramoor in thinking of — and sincerely thanking — Elaine.

The following was placed in The New York Times on Sunday, July 3, 2022.

The Board of Trustees and staff of Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, New York mourn the loss of Elaine Schroeder, whose involvement with Caramoor began over 65 years ago at a meeting with our founder Lucie Rosen. As a former Chairman of the Board and a Trustee until 2020, Mrs. Schroeder was instrumental in ensuring the organization stayed true to the Rosens’ vision. Thanks to her faith in Caramoor’s long-term success, we remain — in Elaine’s words: “a unique place of beauty, a melding of music and nature. … It has been my privilege to have been a part of this endeavor.” The privilege truly was ours. We extend our deepest sympathies to her beloved husband Edmund and their family.
