    At the heart of the historic Rosen House, the Music Room is a soaring yet intimate space used for chamber music, recitals, American roots music and jazz performances, as well as lectures and Caramoor's popular Afternoon Teas. You’ll find yourself surrounded with Renaissance furniture, stained glass windows and architectural elements the Rosens collected and installed in this unique space. Only covered beverages are permitted inside during performances.

    Overview

    The Other Mozart is an award-winning, Drama Desk nominated play telling the true, forgotten story of Nannerl Mozart, the genius sister of Amadeus, who performed throughout Europe alongside him to equal acclaim, but her work and her story faded away, lost to history.

    Set in a stunning 18-foot dress, inspired by the Mozart family’s hilarious and heartbreaking letters, this award-winning production by playwright Sylvia Milo ushers you into a world of opulence and delight – obscured by restriction and prejudice. Music score by Nathan Davis and Phyllis Chen brings Nannerl’s musical imagination to life using clavichords, music boxes, teacups and fluttering fans.

    With the opulent beauty of the dress, the sweet smell of perfume, the sublime enveloping sound and the clouds of dusting powder rising from the stage, the performance creates a multi-sensual experience. There, in communion with the audience, this other Mozart at last tells her story.

    About the Artist

    An award-winning theatre artist, actress, playwright and director, an immigrant from Poland, based in New York City. Milo wrote, starred in, and self-produced (crowd-funded) her one-woman play, The Other Mozart, which had a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run at HERE Arts Center, and received Drama Desk and Off Broadway Alliance (Best Solo Performance) nominations, 2 New York Innovative Theatre Awards (incl. Outstanding Solo Performance), and 8 nominations (incl. Outstanding Full Length Script). The play has had over 400 performances to date in 32 US States and 10 countries, including in London at the St. James Theatre, in Munich at the Pasinger Fabrik, in Vienna and Salzburg at the Mozart apartments (at the invitation of the Mozarteum Foundation), in Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Cultural Center, and in China at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center.

    Milo was commissioned by The Guardian to write an article about The Other Mozart and its cultural impact, which in turn inspired the creation of the PBS / Mediastockade documentary, “Mozart’s Sister.”

    Her latest play, 7 MAGDALENES: I am the utterance of my name, was developed at fellowships at the Bogliasco Foundation in Italy and the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York, with performances at PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century in Chatham, NY, at Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ, at Theaterlab in NYC, and premiering Off-Broadway at HERE Arts.

    The Other Mozart continues touring internationally. in January 2027 it will be presented by the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg at the Mozartwoche Festival (under artistic direction of Rolando Villazón).

      Nathan Davis “writes music that deals deftly and poetically with timbre and sonority” (NYTimes). His ballet/opera Hagoromo premiered at BAM Next Wave Festival in a production from American Opera Projects, performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) with dancers Wendy Whelan and Jock Soto. His works have also been premiered at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, PS122, the Park Avenue Armory, The Kitchen, and Roulette; as well as at festivals in Germany, Austria, Australia, Finland, Holland, Poland, and Cuba; and Portrait concerts at both the Mostly Mozart Festival and Spoleto Festival USA. Nathan has received commissions from ICE, Calder Quartet, Yarn/Wire, La Jolla Symphony Chorus, Steven Schick, Claire Chase, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Miller Theatre, and the Ojai Festival. An Aaron Copland Fellow at the Bogliasco Foundation, he has received other awards from Meet the Composer, Fromm Foundation at Harvard, Copland Fund, Jerome Foundation, American Music Center, MATA, ASCAP, and a residency fellowship at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis (France). He and Phyllis Chen won an NY Innovative Theater Award for their score to Sylvia Milo’s play The Other Mozart, for which Davis also received a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Sound Design. CDs include On the Nature of Thingness (winner of 2016 Independent Music Award for Best Contemporary Classical Album), The Other Mozart, Neutral Buoyant, and Earthworks (with Sylvia Milo). As a percussionist, Nathan is a member of ICE, and has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Seattle Symphony, Tokyo Symphony, and the Nagoya Philharmonic. He holds degrees from Yale and Rice, and he teaches Composition and creative technologies at Mannes/The New School College of Performing Arts (NYC).

        Described by the NY Times as “spellbinding,” Phyllis is a composer, keyboardist, and toy pianist. 2019 Cage-Cunningham Fellow at the Baryshnikov Arts Center. She has created several original miniature theatre works (The Memoirist, The Slumber Thief and Down The Rabbit-Hole) in collaboration with video artist, Rob Dietz. Phyllis has received commissions by the International Contemporary Ensemble, A Far Cry, Claire Chase Density Project, Opera Cabal, Opera SHOP, Singapore International Festival of the Arts, Roulette-Jerome and others. She has received grants from New Music USA, Foundation for the Contemporary Arts, NYSCA (via Concert Artists Guild and Look & Listen Festival), Fromm Foundation and the Pew Heritage Trust. Her most recent collaboration with fellow The Other Mozart composer, Nathan Davis, is a large-scale site-specific work for the new Fisk 150 organ at the Christ Church of Philadelphia. The work, In Plain Air, performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble, featured an outdoor music box installation, including a 400-foot long music box strip. Phyllis was the solo on-stage musician for the Off-Broadway production of Coraline at the Lucille Lortel Theater. She is one of the founding members of the International Contemporary Ensemble and the founder of the UnCaged Toy Piano, a composition competition to further expand the repertoire for unusual instruments. Graduate of Oberlin Conservatory (BM), Northwestern University (MM) and Indiana University (DMA). Her piece Chimers, based on Papageno’s magic bells from Mozart’s Magic Flute, was premiered at the Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival. Her album, On The Nature of Thingness (Starkland), featuring the chamber works of Phyllis and Nathan Davis, was awarded the 2016 Independent Music Award for Best Contemporary Classical Music Album.
