2008-09 GREAT ARTISTS IN THE MUSIC ROOM SUBSCRIBE NOW AND SAVE!
 |
Welcome to the 2008-09 Caramoor Indoors season! We will be taking a close look at two composers in our jewel box of a theater - the 200-seat Music Room, which is ideal for chamber music and the programs we're presenting.
The fall will be devoted to the music of J.S. Bach. From his great grandfather to his grandsons, his family produced a long line of composers; music was in their blood. Johann Sebastian, however, remains the most revered and exalted of all the Bachs. He lived through the peak of the Baroque era, at a time when Western musical instruments were quite different from what we normally hear on today's concert stage. The piano we know today didn't exist; string instruments had a different aesthetic, and wind instruments, like the oboe, flute, horn and trumpet, were radically different. Many questions thus arise: for what instruments did Bach actually write his music? Why have these instruments changed? How do these changes affect performances and interpretations of these works?
We've assembled a stellar cast of artists, performing on both modern and period instruments, to help us examine these questions. Both sides certainly have their merits, and these concerts will give us the opportunity to hear for ourselves, side by side, these different qualities from expert interpreters of Bach. In additon to our three concerts, one of which will include a discussion that I will moderate, two concert/lectures will allow those seeking a deeper understanding of the music of Bach to get closer to this great music.
In the spring months, we'll be celebrating the 200th birthday of the ever-young Felix Mendelssohn in three concerts offering a wide range of his chamber music. Mendelssohn is largely responsible for the renewed interest in J.S. Bach's works in nineteenth-century Europe; an interest that continues to the present day. But with Mendelssohn's great respect of the older master came his ground-breaking championing of the Romantic currents of the new century. His music, in the proper context, sounds as fresh and new as ever. I know these concerts will give us all a great deal of satisfaction. I can't wait to hear them, and I hope you will join us often. - Michael Barrett
