    The Roots of American Roots

    By Roslyn Wertheimer

We're getting excited about our American Roots Music Festival coming up in June and thought it would be a good time to share some aspects about the genre. While the concept of American Roots Music may seem clear just by the title, there is so much more to the genre than its descriptors. Roots music encompasses multiple niche genres including, and certainly not limited to, folk, country, bluegrass, gospel, blues, singer/songwriter, traditional and contemporary roots. What brings these styles together under one category is-quite simply-they are all musical styles that have origins tied to America. It's a style of music that celebrates tradition while embracing the present and innovation throughout musical styles. The artists we are welcoming to Caramoor this summer are all perfect examples how this genre works toward the constant progression of music. Check them out below and explore how American Roots may just be your new favorite thing!   Rosanne Cash's new album, "The River & The Thread" has been getting a lot of critical attention from sources like "Rolling Stone", "TIME", "American Songwriter", and "USA Today". Rosanne Cash - Etta's Tune (1 Mic 1 Take)

Tony Triscka - One on One: Lost April 7th, 2014 City Winery New York City

The Lone Bellow - Green Eyes and a Heart of Gold

Spuyten Duyvil - Frieght Train by Elizabeth Cotton/Louis Collins at Caramoor 2013 (acoustic version)
